How can stop-motion animation be used to support second grade students understanding of place value?
Conclusion
The inquiry helps me learn lots about integrating technology in elementary classroom.
Firstly, implementing technology in classroom needs lots of preparations. Writing lesson plan, providing lots of literature supports, and imaging what I will talk with student in the class are essential for a successful lesson. At the beginning of our inquiry, we just combined place value with stop motion together. After we discussed it in our group, how to integrate it in place value confused us a long time until we found the use of place value is related to money in real world. Therefore, we started to plan a lesson plan to teach student place value by spending money. However, when we planned our lesson, we didn’t know student’s background. If the student didn’t know the value of money, we can not work our plan well. We began to think about more situations that would happen in our class. In case to student’s distribution, we also created lots of creative materials to help her focus on our lesson. As we taught how to use technology, we needed to create chances to let student experience more.
Secondly, it is effective to use technology in teaching how to solve math problems. while we combining stop motion animation with Math problems, we provide student lots of materials, teach student solve problems by traditional teaching and technology respectively. When student totally understand how to solve math problem in traditional methods, she will show the process by creating stop motion animation. During the learning procedures, students can reinforce knowledge by using knowledge. Moreover, technology help math problem more interesting and visualized. With involvement in the process, students will pay more attention on learning and transfer teacher’s knowledge into their own.
Lastly, The process of integrating technology in academic subject benefits students more. For example, promoting technology in the classroom need more collaborative work. As we taught the lesson, there was just one student. However, we cannot teach students one to one. While observing our student working, I found that we worked as a team. We solved problem, made materials, took pictures, posted our work together. If we teach technology in our class, we can divide them into small group, which can develop their ability of cooperation. After we teach them basic knowledge of technology and academic, they can create more by themselves. Because of more involvement in learning process, students also become more interested in study, which can increase their achievement in academic learning.
