I still remember when I was 10 years old, I was the oldest kids in neighborhood. We always played simulation and role play game as we were in vacation. Once time I acted as a teacher who needed to read an article for them, and other kids repeated the sentences after me. My reading was like fresh air in that muggy summer. Kids sit on the chairs in front of me, I waited for them preparing well for my speaking. Then I taught them how to read the sentence, what the meaning of vocabulary is. After I taught them read the article, they were divided into different paragraphs and read them one by one. I praised everyone when kids finished their reading. Because I was the oldest kids, I knew more than them and I taught my course to them. They were willing to listen to my explanation and follow my teaching process. At that time, I felt great as I helped them understand what I learned from my class. So, I was wondering whether teacher would be my ideal career in the future.

As I entered into my college, I chose educational major. After learning education and teaching philosophy, I realized teaching knowledge to students was more difficult and complex than what I did at 10-year-old. With three years’ studying, I find my passion for teaching is teaching elementary student math. My goal as a teacher is to help students become interested in learning math, learn Math easier and experience the logic in Math. I can not keep thinking what can make Math fun and easy. In China, Students have lots of homework to improve their math study. To get high grade, they just practice math problems again and again. Because of failed in math, some of them don’t have high achievement. When I learned history of Math in college, I was surprised how interesting the math is. If students only learn the math from exercise, they will not experience math’s fun.

When I was in my internship last semester, students use lots of technologies in learning math at PK. Yong elementary school and the teacher uses different methods from what I learned in my country. At the beginning of the math class, students play 5 minutes’ game to practice math problem. The game is interesting and diversity. Students enjoy math when they play the game. I was wondering how technology encourages students to learn math. The problem is still not solved until I take my technology class this semester. Professor introduced kinds of technology which can be integrated into elementary school education.

I was attracted by stop motion animation as I watched the video. The movie combines drawing and cartoon together, which impressed me a lot. I still remembered the fisherman who came across lots of fun things when he drove the boat on the sea. After I experienced how to make a stop motion by myself, I was wondering whether I can use it in math teaching. With discussion in our group, I begin my inquiry with the follow wondering:

  • Will 2nd grade student learn the value of money?

  • Will 2nd grade student know how to solve place value?

  • Will 2nd grade student be interested in stop motion?

  • Did  the 2nd grade student use technology in her daily life?
